acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. According to TCM, the human body has a network of channels or meridians that run throughout the body, and acupuncture works by stimulating specific points along these meridians to restore and balance the flow of energy or Qi (pronounced "chee") in the body.

Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including pain, migraines, digestive problems, respiratory issues, skin conditions, neurological disorders, and mental health issues. It is also commonly used as a complementary therapy for various chronic conditions. An acupuncture session will include TCM tongue and pulse diagnosis.

Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified practitioner. It is important to seek out a licensed and trained acupuncturist if you are considering acupuncture as a treatment option.

FAQ

  • Acupuncture is not painful! The needles are tiny and thin and most people have a nap on the table once the needles are inserted. Tamara will show you the needles and explain the process in detail to assess your comfort level with the use of the acupuncture needles. If you prefer not to use needles, or find any discomfort with the process, you may choose to have acupressure points and techniques used instead. Please discuss these options with your practitioner in your initial session to decide what is right for you.

  • Acupuncture treats the root causes of symptoms and restores balance to the body and mind. Acupuncture is based on the meridians or pathways that we have throughout our body. When these pathways become blocked, dis-ease happens. Placing the needles on specific points along these meridians allows the Qi or energy to flow again, therefore restoring balance and stopping the symptoms.

  • The number of sessions depends on the issues that are being addressed. Chronic pain issues can take between 5 and 10 sessions to resolve. Digestive issues may only take 2-3 sessions. Your practitioner will discuss with you the best treatment plan for you in your initial session.

  • Tongue Diagnosis involves examining the tongue for its shape, size, color and texture of the tongue body and coat. Each organ is represented on the tongue and this gives an insight as to how the organs are functioning. For example, the tip of the tongue represents the heart. If the tip is more red than the rest of the tongue, this reveals that there is an emotional issue at play.

Pulse Diagnosis involves feeling the pulses at both wrists. There are 6 locations on the wrist and the practitioner will analyze the rate, the depth of the pulse, the strength, at each position. The results of this diagnosis gives insight to the internal organs such as liver, spleen, heart and lungs.
